How is Bubble Wrap made?
Bubble Wrap brand cushioning starts as polyethylene (plastic) in the form of beads. These beads are about the size of a pea and are sucked into an extruder with a long cylinder. Inside the cylinder is a screw which runs the entire length. As the screw turns, it builds up heat and melts the beads into a liquid which is squeezed out of the cylinder into staked sheets of clear plastic film. Once the desired thickness of film layers is achieved, the first layer is wrapped around a drum with holes punched into it. Suction is then applied to the drum, drawing this layer into the holes and forming the bubbles. The other layers are laminated over the layer in the holes joining them together and trapping air in-between creating the bubble wrap products everyone knows and uses today.
